Schools For UniverCity Residents

Schooling for residents of UniverCity at SFU is provided by the Burnaby School District. The Burnaby School District employs 4,000 staff, educates almost 24,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 along with providing programs and services to more than 16,000 adult learners.


It is official, on March 24, 2010, the Board of Education announced the official name for Burnaby School District’s newest elementary school located at the UniverCity neighbourhood at SFU – University Highlands.
University Highlands was official announced in January 2009 but has been part of the City of Burnaby’s OCP and SFU’s vision since 1996. Set to official open for the 2010 school year this will be welcome addition to the growing UniverCity area by all. Located in the heart of SFU’s mixed-use community, University Highlands will be a key element to the growth of the area. Already many families of all walks of life call UniverCity their home, many of which with younger children that were forced to attend school off the mountain.
Designed to accommodate 40 kindergarten aged children and 275 elementary students, University Highlands is expected to reach its full capacity by 2012. The school is a conversion of an existing office building and is leased to the school district by SFU Community Trust. It features a new gymnasium, extensive seismic upgrades, meets Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification & water-efficient landscaping and irrigation. In addition the school has been designed to ensure that 75% of interior space is exposed to natural light and 75% of the building shell is reused.

High School

Located at the base of Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby Mountain Secondary School (BMSS), saw an enrolment of 1,294 students for the 2009 year. As part of the Burnaby School District, BMSS’ offers education programs for students in Grades 8 through 12 and falls under the September to June academic year.
To service students BMSS offer programs for all levels. Students benefit from :

Early French Immersion

Welcome to Ecole Sperling Elementary School. The message that appears when you first visit Sperling Elementary Schools website, a great way to inform viewers that this is more than just a traditional elementary school but also a French Immersion school. If you live or are looking to live in the UniverCity area and have elementary grade children and want them to benefit from Canada’s second language than this is the school you will want to know about.

It is great to read that the Burnaby School District is using such terms as “inclusive” in their mission statements to demonstrate the diversity and acceptance that the district wants to project to its students and the community. Located at the base of Burnaby Mountain and short drive or bus ride from UniverCity, Sperling Elementary offers a dual track program of early French Immersion and an English Program for students from Kindergarten to Grade 7.

Sperling Elementary prides itself on having a dedicated staff and strong ties to the community with committed parents that form a great volunteering base. The school, with help from the parent volunteers, offers extra activities and benefits for students such as:

Late French Immersion

Capitol Hill Elementary school offers a board learning base and a very diverse student body. Students from all walks of life can be found at this school, evident by the fact that 18 different languages are represented by students. If you are looking for a late French Immersion program, Grades 6 & 7, this would be the school that your children will attend.

In addition to the English program for students Kindergarten through Grade 7, Capitol Hill offers late French Immersion, district Alternative Program, opportunity to special needs and is attended by a number of aboriginal students.

The PAC group is very active at Capitol Hill and has been responsible for on-going fund raising to ensure more than adequate resources are provided to the eager and cooperative students.

Located at the base of Burnaby Mountain, Capitol Hill Elementary School is a short drive or bus ride from the UniverCity area and is attended by some 323 students (enrolment as of 2009).

Secondary French Immersion

Located at the base of Burnaby Mountain, a short drive or bus ride from UniverCity, Alpha Secondary School offers a secondary French Immersion program for youths from grades 8 through 12. In addition to French Alpha offers Japanese for grades 9 through 12, Spanish for grades 9 through 11 and Mandarin from grades 9 through 12. The faculty at Alpha are living up to their mission of being a multi-cultural environment.

From their website it is clear to see that technology is a large part of school and is one of the most advanced Burnaby School District sites offering a great deal of information on the programs, course and teachers. Additional features such as being able to submit absence notices on-line, searching the school’s library, and a dedicated scholarship information site for grades 11 and 12 youths are just some of the exciting tools found there.
