The lead drummer for the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band will be honoured next month with a provincial prize.
Scottish native and Coquitlam resident Reid Maxwell will be one of 34 British Columbians to receive a 2015 B.C. Community Achievement Award at Government House on April 24.
Maxwell joined the pipe band in 1992 after winning the World Pipe Band Championship with Toronto’s 78th Fraser Highland Pipe Band in 1987; it was the first time a band outside Scotland to win the Worlds.
“A few years later, we had that magical run,” said Maxwell referring to SFU’s world champion wins in 1995, ‘96, ‘99 and 2001 (the band also won in 2008 and 2009).
Under Maxwell, the band’s drum corps has also won the Grade 1 World Drum Corps championship four times.
Maxwell is the only lead drummer in the world to win championships with three different bands (he also won the Worlds with Scotland’s Dysart and Dundonald Pipe Band when he was 16). In total, he has 16 world championship titles.
